While practicing for the 1986 Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Richard Petty hit the wall, twice. The hits were so hard, Petty was taken to a local hospital with a concussion and his car was put out of commission. Dale Inman and Ulrich installed a Petty Enterprises engine late Saturday night before the race and Petty started the #6 STP Monte Carlo on race day - before eventually turning it over to Ulrich, who finished 38th. These circumstances led NASCAR to institute the back-up car policy, which remains in effect today.
