In 1976, Kelly Guthrie became the first woman to earn a starting spot in a superspeedway NASCAR Winston Cup race, in the 600-mile race at Charlotte, where she finished 15th.

In 1977, she was Top Rookie at the Daytona 500 and in four other Cup races. Her 6th-place finish in the Cup race at Bristol remains a landmark of the modern era.
