A NASCAR legend and a World War II Veteran are two very distinct honors that sum up Robert "Red" Byron - one of racing's all-time greatest drivers.
In 1949, the very first official NASCAR season, Byron was at his prime in stock car racing. He outraced the field and won two of the eight races that season. He was the first driver to win a race on the tough beaches of Daytona and the inaugural premier series points champion.
And to add a twist, he did it all with a brace attached to the clutch pedal that assisted with a leg injury Byron sustained in World War II, that left him hospitalized for 27 months . Champion, veteran, and hero define him. Add in superior racing skills and we know why he has earned his spot in the National Motorsports Hall of Fame.
